FILM OF THE WEEK: HANCOCK

Posted: Tuesday 1 Jul 2008
Above: Smith plays a superhero with a drinking problem

Certificate 12A. Director Peter Berg. Starring Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman

What’s it all about? Superhero Hancock (Smith) may have special powers, but he’s also a drunk with a serious image problem. When he tries to help, people end up hating him. Enter smooth PR consultant Ray (Bateman) – who helps Hancock clean up his act – and his gorgeous wife Mary (Theron).

What’s good? Will Smith is his usual likeable self in this peppy comedy, delivering both laughs and action as his clumsy character flies around the skies trying to do the right thing. Charlize Theron looks stunning and really comes into her own later in the film, when the story takes a darker turn.

What’s bad? The tone of the movie feels confused: one minute it’s all smutty humour, the next it’s trying to make a serious point or be a showy action movie.

new! verdict: While far from perfect, this anti-superhero movie delivers enough giggles and twists to entertain – and you’ve got to love the casting.
