PRIMAL SCREAM: BEAUTIFUL FUTURE

3/5

Posted: Tuesday 22 Jul 2008

What you need to know… The indie legends release their ninth album.

First impressions… You should never judge a book by its cover.

But you can usually judge a band by what they look like. Primal Scream are a good example.

Take a look at the photo above.

They look like a grizzled, hard-living bunch of fellas who’ve got together and formed a Rolling Stones tribute band.

Which is funny, because that’s what many critics accuse them of being.

OK, frontman Bobby Gillespie might slowly be morphing into a weird hybrid of Frank Gallagher out of Shameless and Mick Jagger, and bits of this album smell suspiciously of pastiche, but the band have still come up with some classic-sounding rock’n’roll moments as well as some surprisingly modern electro pop tracks.

Beautiful Future is their catchiest single in ages, while Uptown is seriously funky.

And the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Over & Over is the perfect late-night chill-out soundtrack. They may be grizzled but they’ve still got it.

You’ll like this if you like… New Order, Oasis.

Our favourite track… Over & Over.

Did you know? The band recorded their audience singing the track Can’t Go Back at T In The Park and it’s now available as a download.

OK! verdict… The Future’s bright for the Scream.
